Community members honored for service to international students, scholars

The journey of an international student can be challenging. Those who undertake challenges sometimes need help along the way. The Office for International students and scholars is one of many offices at MSU that work with international students. Others across campus also play roles.
In 2007, OISS started a tradition with the Globie Awards, to recognize those who have helped make MSU and the community of Greater Lansing a more internationally friendly place.

Foster Altinsel McCoy Kumata

Eunice Foster is associate dean for undergraduate programs and director of the Institute of Agricultural Technology, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Foster joined MSU in August 1982 as the first woman and only black member of the faculty in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences. She has worked closely with graduate students from Botswana, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Rwanda.

Zeynep Altinsel, international teaching assistant coordinator, Teaching Assistant Program, has taught at MSU for 16 years. She teaches International TA English classes and coordinates the TEAM pronunciation program and the ITA-Undergraduate Buddy Program. Zeynep also interacts with American undergraduate students who help support teaching assistants in culture and language programs at MSU.

Chandos McCoy is the manager of Owen Graduate Center and Van Hoosen Apartments. McCoy has held several positions in the Housing and Food Services Department since 1978. He has designed and implemented a variety of educational initiatives for on-campus residents. At McDonel Hall, he created the International Language and Culture Floor, which brings domestic and international students together.

Lillian Kumata, Community Volunteers for International Programs, has been a volunteer to the benefit of MSU’s international community as part of a lifetime of service to others. She has volunteered with international students for 50 years and has a knack for getting others involved. She brings the community an untiring commitment to bridging cultures on a person-to-person basis with vision and outreach.
