Timothy Beers, professor of physics and astronomy, is heading up MSU’s role in an international research project designed to better understand the structure and evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. The project – the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration, or SEGUE – is funded by the Sloan Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the participating universities and institutions. Some of the project’s follow-up work will be done using the SOAR Telescope, which is owned and operated by a consortium of institutions, including MSU.
