MSU’s Career Services Network was awarded a 2008 National Association of Colleges and Employers Excellence Award in the category of “information resources for student.” The award recognizes the best information/resources on career development or employment topics targeted and distributed to college students free of charge.

Daniel King, academic adviser for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected chairperson of the Engineering and Science Advising Commission in the National Academic Advising Association, effective October 2008. King will provide leadership to the commission regarding engineering and science advising, promoting participation in NACADA activities and programming, and proposing and facilitating activities and publications to advance the professional development of its members and contribute to the general body of knowledge of the commission.

William J. Latta, MSU director of facilities planning and space management, was elected as chairperson for the MSU Federal Credit Union board of directors at an executive session following the credit union’s annual meeting.

Merle Potter, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, was awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 2008 James Harry Potter Gold Medal “for making a renowned impact on thermodynamics through 42 years of outstanding teaching and through published textbooks on thermal sciences and applied mathematics, and for research on energy consumption in dwellings and industrial plants.” The award will be presented Nov. 3, during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Boston.

MSU Press was awarded a Gold medal from ForeWord Magazine Book Awards, for their book, Mapping in Michigan and the Great Lakes Region by David Macleod. Award winners, representing the best work from
independent publishers in 2007, were selected by a panel of librarian and bookseller judges.

Robert Sanne has been hired as a new chef for The State Room Restaurant. Sanne will be primarily responsible for the development and execution of the restaurant’s dinner menu. John Merucci has been hired as the new executive chef of MSU’s Brook Lodge. Merucci will be overseeing Brook Lodge’s food services department, including staff, menu development and food production for all facility events.
