Joan Broderick, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, was selected to serve as chairperson of the Metallo- biochemistry Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, through June 30, 2006. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievements in their scientific disciplines.

Douglas Buhler, professor and chairperson of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, has been named MSU Extension state leader for agricultural programs. Buhler will provide leadership on campus and across the state in helping MSU Extension to strengthen field staff and campus connections, in addition to identifying programming objectives.

Keith Groty, associate professor of labor and industrial relations, and retired assistant vice president of human resources, received honorary life membership in the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.

Clifford Haka, director of libraries, was elected vice chairperson of the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees to a term expiring in October 2004.

G. Stanley Howell, professor of horticulture, was awarded the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission’s annual Wine Integrity Award for making significant contributions to the expansion and improvement of the Michigan wine industry.

Piotr Piecuch, associate professor of chemistry and adjunct professor of physics, has been selected as a corresponding member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities in Paris.

H. Allen Tucker, professor emeritus of animal science, has been honored with the Dennis Fenton Graduate Alumni Award from the Cook College Alumni Association at Rutgers University. The award is given to alumni for outstanding accomplishments in his or her professional, civic or volunteer work, which reflects the dignity and distinction on Cook College at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Diane Wakoski, Distinguished University Professor of English and Writer in Residence, has been awarded the 2003 Michigan Author Award by the Michigan Library Association and the Michigan Center for the Book. Wakoski is the author of more than 50 books of poetry.
