NAME: John Shaw
OCCUPATION: Library Assistant III, MSU Libraries Digital and Multimedia Center/G. Robert Vincent Voice Library

If you’ve ever wanted to know what Gen. Dwight Eisenhower said to the troops in Normandy, hear what baseball legend Babe Ruth had to say, or listen to President George Bush’s latest speech, you should talk to John Shaw.

Shaw works in the MSU Libraries’ Digital and Multimedia Center, which includes the G. Robert Vincent Voice Library, a collection of voice recordings dating back to 1888. Although he supervises student employees, manages budgets, aids in collection development and more, he feels the most important part of his job is helping the public.

“The real joy of working in libraries is dealing with the public,” he said. “You must be able to problem solve and work with users in a number of different ways to help them figure out exactly what they want.”

Shaw also provides technical assistance for some of the library programs, including the Friday Night Film Series and the Michigan Writers Series. In addition, he supervises the digitization of the Voice Library collection, which serves to preserve rare voice recordings and make many available for listening on the Web.

“I am inspired by what we do in the MSU Libraries,” he said. “We provide an important service to the MSU community and many other users.”

Shaw, who last year received the MSU Libraries’ Career Achievement Award, received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from MSU. He has been working for MSU Libraries since 1974.
