'U' to make Detroit voices more readily available
The words of prominent African Americans such as author Alex Haley, musician James Brown and former Detroit Pistons' basketball star Dave Being will be more accessible to the public through an online archive to be developed by MSU scholars. (Full story)
Nominations sought for provost search committee
Proposed procedures for faculty and student participation in the selection of a new provost and vice president for academic affairs were presented to members of the Faculty Council Tuesday, Aug. 31. (Full story)

The Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Awards Committee is seeking nominations of university employees who excel in job performance, have outstanding interpersonal skills, contribute to efficiency and effectiveness and provide valuable service to the university. (Full story)
Profs write biography of British medical legend
One-hundred-fifty-year-old lessons of John Snow still relevant today
It was 150 years ago this September that a London physician named John Snow urged officials in his city to shut down a well-used water pump in the heart of the Soho district, a move that may have helped to hasten the end of a deadly cholera epidemic that had killed hundreds of people. (Full story)
Committees continue work on CHM expansion plan
In what could modestly be called a flurry of activity, a variety of committees, including the president’s College of Human Medicine (CHM) Oversight Committee, have been meeting over the summer examining the possible expansion of the college into west Michigan. (Full story)
American Indian Law Program launched
MSU College of Law has launched the most comprehensive American Indian Law Program in the Midwest. (Full story)
Computer science, criminal justice team up as new partners in crime
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the School of Criminal Justice have teamed up as partners in crime to launch an innovative academic program that combines the two disciplines. Beginning this semester, undergraduates majoring in computer science will be able to complete a cognate — similar to a minor — in criminal justice. (Full story)

'U' welcomes top scholars to campus
This week, MSU welcomed more than 7,000 freshmen to campus, including 18 students who were awarded MSU’s top academic scholarships for 2004. (Full story)
New collegians reminiscent of World War II generation
The MSU class of 2008 and their contemporaries, the “second wave” of the Millennial Generation, are more like the college students of World War II than those of the Vietnam War era, says an MSU admissions official. (Full story)

Twilight in the Garden to benefit Kresge
The fifth annual Kresge Art Museum “Twilight in the Garden” fundraiser will take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts and its surrounding gardens. Tickets to the event begin at $100 per person. (Full story)

Wharton Center releases new pricing program to entice student patrons
In an effort to entice more students to take advantage of the entertainment offered at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, the center has released a new student pricing program with big discounts. (Full story)

Academic Personnel Salary Adjustment Guidelines and University-level Faculty Market Adjustment Funding Pool
At its meeting on June 18, 2004, the Board of Trustees approved the 2004-05 budget development guidelines. The overall compensation adjustment, inclusive of health care and other benefits, will be approximately 3.7 percent. (Full story)
